One of the greatest things that a person can learn is how to practice gratitude. In some ways, gratitude is even more important than love in meditation. The reason is that gratitude can be felt without being spoken aloud. Many people are familiar with the saying "give before you receive." That saying is meant to express the fact that it is better to give things away before you receive them rather than receive things first and then refuse to give them away or to share them.

During your meditation, think about all the good things you have received in your life and appreciate them. Think also of all the people and things that have been important to you throughout the course of your lifetime. This will help you realize that your life has been full of amazing events and experiences. It may be difficult at first to stay in this appreciative state, but with practice, you will be able to stay in this meditative state for as long as you like. When you find yourself feeling depressed because you are focusing too much on the negative things in your life, remind yourself that as a matter of fact you have been given many great things throughout your lifetime.
